Who We Are

Grid Australia is the organisation which represents the owners of Australia’s
$10 billion electricity transmission networks in the National Electricity Market (NEM), plus Western Australia. Grid Australia was launched in April 2008 and was formerly known throughout the industry as the Electricity Transmission Network Owners Forum (or ETNOF). Its members comprise:

  • ElectraNet Pty Ltd (South Australia);
  • Powerlink Queensland (Queensland);
  • SP AusNet (Victoria);
  • Transend Networks Pty Ltd (Tasmania);
  • TransGrid (New South Wales); and
  • Western Power (Western Australia).

The electricity transmission networks of the first five companies are interconnected and form the ‘backbone of the NEM’. Collectively, these
Grid Australia members:

  • own and operate over 40,000 km of high voltage transmission lines;
  • have network assets of more than $10 billion; and
  • invest approximately $1.2 billion in the networks each year.

Including Western Power, the above figures total over 47,000 kms of line,
$12 billion in assets and approximately $2.2 billion in capital investment per annum.

As the ‘backbone of the NEM’, Grid Australia seeks to work closely with the NEM market/system operator (AEMO) and with NEM institutions to ensure that the NEM arrangements and National Electricity Rules (Rules) can benefit from the capabilities (both present and future) of the interconnected transmission grids.
